Chameleon Carousal

Updated: Aug 8, 2018

(August 2017)

Chameleon Carousal is a 2D party game, where players can hide in their own color and gain special meter, but lose health when they stay in it. This was a small three-week project that I part took as a Designer.

Contributions: For the duration of the project, I aided with the General Design Direction of the game and the creation of the game modes. Also, worked on the Attacking and Special Abilities in the game.

Reflection: The entirety of the project was a very interesting experience since it was one of the first Unreal projects I have been part of, and was a quick challenge for the people in the team. I personally believe that, Design-wise, the game had solid mechanics and game-modes that pushed us to accomplish more than was expected from us during this small challenge. We were able to create a multiplayer experience that was worth the time of the class, including three different game modes: Deathmatch, King of the Hill, and Paint the Wall.

I include this here because I personally enjoyed my time on this project. It was a really small project, but it has an incredible amount of potential and could be expanded upon more. The game can fit an incredible number of game modes other than the ones already included. For example, with the color changing mechanic, one could create a game mode where the player has to be in their respective color before a small timer goes out, and as the game progresses, the room gets smaller, making the players have to fight for their spot. This, and many other ideas, could make this game a must-have for couch-party games.

This game proves the point that one simple mechanic can be built-up into other ideas. This is one of the most important Design Lessons I have learned during my time in Full Sail; complicated mechanics are not always good mechanics.
